US News and World Reports just completed an excellent and fairly comprehensive ranking of the best diets to meet various goals. For our purposes we are going to focus on their top five and also give you our top five. Their ranking was based on analysis froma panel of experts looking at ease of following, short & long term weight loss, nutritional value and safety. Our list is based on what we have used and seen work in the real world.

It is common for someone who wants to lose weight to cut out carbs completely, and most likely they will see the scale go down which makes them think they are doing the right thing. This practice works so well at getting pounds off that entire companies exist to sell diet programs pushing this simple idea. But what if some of those pounds you lose actually make it easier for your body to add more unwanted pounds once you return to normal eating?

We are constantly being pitched quick weight-loss plans, products and schemes. The reality of quick weight loss is it is often followed by even quicker weight gain because quick weight-loss typically has two bad side effects, the required calorie reduction slows down your metabolism and unless your extremely overweight (a hundred or more pounds) when you lose more than two pounds per week a greater percentage of that weight over 2 pounds is muscle and reduced muscle mass further slows down your metabolism.

It seems like there are countless diets out there, all promising to be the most effective way to shed those unwanted pounds. While these diets might have unique labels and marketing the ones that actually work really take one of three approaches, they are either calorie controlled balanced diets, low fat diets or low carbohydrate diets. To make things slightly more complicated some are a combination of two of the above, but their main underlying philosophy will typically be built upon one of the three.

We love packaged food diets. When you are beginning your weight loss journey they are an invaluable asset to helping you restructure how you think about food and are a sure way to see large amounts of pounds come off quickly which will help keep you on the journey in those tough initial weeks. However there is a danger to your waistline if you stay on them to long, and that danger comes when you eventually get off them.

I admit it, I love a snack. Sometimes I really need that between meal, and other times I just really want it, but regardless I love it. So keeping my weight loss off requires me to snack smartly because I am not willing to buy bigger pants. With that in mind here is my list of the top ten snack options.

Diets suck. There I said it and feel so much better. Nobody likes diets, the very work makes most of our stomachs turn. A diet brings up the idea of depriving yourself things you enjoy and why would any sane human being want to do that? So instead of diet think of the way you eat as your nutritional plan, at the very least it sounds better. A sound nutritional plan involves general healthy eating, allowing you some crave satisfying treats and the occasional cheat.

One thing I hear when discussing organic foods is how expensive it is. Yes organic options do cost more but there is more to food than just the per pound costs, there is also the value you get for your money so while organic foods may appear to cost more at the register they are often greater values to your body.

Eating out is just a fact of life. There is no way to avoid it and to be frank why would you want to? It’s enjoyable, it lets you gather with people you like, it’s a new experience, and besides who wants to make their own food night after night. When you do decide to eat out here are some basic rules to follow to keep the damage to a minimum.
