This time of year a lot of people purchase that new gym membership or rededicate themselves to actually using that membership they have been paying for. When you first walk into a gym it can be rather overwhelming, well don’t feel bad because everyone has that feeling at initially. The first thing you need to do is take a deep breath and realize most of those fancy machines aren’t going to be part of your program anyway and instead focus on the few pieces of highly effective equipment you will be building your workout routines around.

There has been a huge increase in the popularity of 5 & 10ks over the past few years. These are great events for us regular folks to get a good workout, prove ourselves to be relatively fit and are often associated with charities so they can be a great way to work up a sweat and give back. One of my fitness goals for 2011 is to complete my first 10k. I had a 5k scheduled in 2010 that I had to skip because I tore a ligament in my knee and a 10k scheduled that I had to skip because I threw out my back. Both of those injuries were the result of overtraining so I did some research talked with some experts and decided to structure a training program around not only preparing you for race day but also trying to ensure that you actually can show up.

It’s the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas that often make it clear to us how time really is at a premium. Between my regular schedule, everything I need to do to close out the year, the holidays and holiday related events I need to watch every minute to make sure I don’t let my fitness go sideways on me. There is also going to be a series of food temptations some of which I know I won’t be resisting so I need to eat right so that I don’t have to break out the fat pants again. I devised the following program through trial and error (actually lots of errors) to ensure that I can get the most out of my limited time to work out, keep my diet clean and strict so I can sneak a cheat or two at the upcoming holiday events and still keep the fat pants buried in the closet.

So sitting at my favorite coffee shop the other day while discussing my upcoming book, Diary Of a Former Fat Man, one of the employees told me they would love to get in shape but they don’t have the money to do it. Well this sent me on a mission of research and experimentation to design a good full body workout that requires no equipment at all.

Ok I can here you now, “BULKING? Didn’t you write a book called Diary of A Former Fat Man”? Well yes I did write that book, available on amazon.com next month (please pardon the shameless plug) and yep, I did say bulking, but hold on there are good reasons to add muscle.

This time of year time really is at a premium and I am with Lori in having a lot less time to get my workouts in as I am sure a lot of other people are. So with that in mind here is a quick, dumbbell only workout anyone can knock out in about 20 minutes at home. Do this three to four times a week and as long as you don’t feast too heavily on holiday fare you should keep your weight in check for the New Year.

I hate cardio, absolutely hate it. I know I need to do it, I know it is good for my heart, overall health & is essential if I want to continue to burn off fat, but I still hate it.

This workout is highly customizable; uses lighter weights (as you should to avoid causing more damage) and best of all can be done in 25 to 30 minutes.
