An Organic Quickie

One thing I hear when discussing organic foods is how expensive it is. Yes organic options do cost more but there is more to food than just the per pound costs, there is also the value you get for your money so while organic foods may appear to cost more at the register they are often greater values to your body.
Let’s start with beef. Industrial raised beef that is grain feed and hormone pumped has lost almost all of its nutritional value. What’s worse is all those chemicals that are pumped into the grain and the cow flow right into your body wrecking havoc on your hormone balance. While beef isn’t the best meat option (turkey and chicken are always better choices) non organic beef is one of the worst things you can put in your body.
Moving to chicken and turkey you again deal with the chemical issues in non organic selections. Hormones are used to beef up the birds at a quicker rate than nature intended and those chemicals come right along into your system.
For fruits and vegetables it is a double chemical assault; first chemicals are used to grow the produce and second chemical are used to preserve the produce until you buy it. I would always rather have to throw out fruit that went bad then ingest unknown chemicals into my body which will have unknown results.
Exactly what the label organic means is a tricky matter. There are minimal standards established to be able to brand a product organic and needless to say a host of companies do the bare minimum to be able to charge you the organic premium. Often the best sources for the most organic foods are small farms. Think of farmers markets as a good place to start. Typically these are working farms where the people selling you the food are eating the same thing they are selling you so most likely they are going to limit the poisons they put in themselves. There are also some companies that go above and beyond the minimal standards of organic. It never hurts to research the suppliers of the food you are buying and stick with the ones who are offering you best value not just the cheapest price.
