Mistakes happen, just don’t let them become permanent

October 11, 2010 1 Comment

As adults we all know mistakes happen way too often. We all make them and we make them most days. In reality a mistake usually doesn’t mean the end of the world and often provide us a needed opportunity to step back and re-evaluate what we are doing and what we want. However way to often when people make a mistake on their diet and exercise program they allow that one mistake to spiral them back to the unhealthy lifestyle they were once so dedicated to reversing.

The key to not allowing that mistake to take over and give you an excuse to return to that unhealthy lifestyle is to first realize it was a mistake and then realize it really isn’t that big of a deal. So you had a piece of cake, or some fattening fast food, or skipped your work out and now your scale is showing negative results. So what? It was a mistake, own up to it and move on. Once you get back on track those pounds will come right back off and you will again be heading in the direction you want to go. I hate when I hear people say they can’t cheat on their diet or skip a work out or two. That is setting you up for failure because in the real life you will screw up and if you don’t allow yourself to screw up you will focus on the screw up and not focus your energy on getting back on track.

Remember you are not an elite athlete or a body builder training for a competition. If your goal is to weigh two hundred pounds by your high school reunion it’s not the end of the world if you show up at two hundred five pounds and take another two weeks to reach that two hundred pound goal. So relax, if you make a mistake big deal, as an adult I am willing to bet a piece of cake, an extra beer or two, or a few skipped workouts isn’t the biggest mistake you have ever made. Just don’t use that excuse as a reason to return to that unhealthy living you were trying to move away from in the first place. Get back on track and shortly the effects of that mistake will be nothing more than a distant memory.
